Lost Project?

Four tiles made 12 years ago, part of a project that never saw the light of day...
The project: make four tiles of the same size (5x5cm) every year to see what would come up. I never got around to it.
Twelve years later... will I? won't I? why not?
These tiles each measure 5x5cm or 2x2 inches.

Projet perdu?
Quatre tuiles fabriquées il y a déjà 12 ans, partie d'un projet qui n'a jamais vu le jour. Le projet: faire quatre tuiles de la même grandeur (5x5cm) à tous les ans pour voir le résultat. Le projet est tombé à l'eau!! Douze ans plus tard... oui? non? pourquoi pas?
Les tuiles ci-bas mesurent 5x5cm chaque.

tip # 22: Pretending to Weave

Having a strong fiber connection, I always loved weaving because it reminds me of life: wax and wane, inside and out, high and low etc. Early on I tried to weave the clay but it was complicated with strips of clay sticking to each other and the impossibility to adjust them. So I found this way to make faux weaving. And now, decide to share.
Truc #22: On fait semblant qu'on tisse
Le tissage c'est comme la vie, intérieur-extérieur, haut-bas, dedans-dehors etc. J'ai toujours été portée vers les arts textiles, génétique aidant! A mes débuts j'avais tenté de tisser avec la pâte mais me suis vite découragée: ça collait, impossible de faire des ajustements. J'ai donc trouvé une autre manière.



This blade holder was made just about ten years ago hence the wear and tear marks. It is still my favourite one.
It is quite easy to create the illusion of weaving.
Start by making a round log. Wrap it with a thin sheet of a contrasting colour. Make it rectangular and cut off the ends on the smaller side. Let it rest overnight - important.
Just like in the picture below. It is resting, he he.

Ce porte-lame a été fabriqué il y a plus de dix ans; les marques d'usure en témoignent.
Le faux tissage est facile à faire.
On fait un rouleau que l'on recouvre avec une mince couche de pâte d'une couleur contrastante. On lui donne une forme rectangulaire puis on coupe les bouts les plus étroits. Important: laisser reposer pendant la nuit. Tout come dans l'image ci-dessous: y font dodo!



After it has rested, start cutting very thin slices off your rectangle. Roll out another sheet of clay which should be larger than the project you are thinking of.
Starting in the middle of the sheet, start placing the thin rectangular slices. I use a razor blade for this because it is easier to eliminate a cut with a razor than a hole poked with a needle.

Après le repos, faire des tranches le plus mince possible. Préparer une autre feuille de pâte qui devrait être plus grande que le projet final. En commençant au milieu de cette feuille, placer les tranches rectangulaires: j'utilise une lame fine plutôt qu'une aiguille parce qu'il est plus facile d'éliminer les marques de lame que les trous d'aiguille.




That's it. All you need is a little patience and some time. Don't be in a hurry, relax, listen to some music and have fun.
You can vary the size of your projects: from tiny to big.

Voilà, c'est tout. Un ti peu de patience, faut pas être pressé, on met la musique, on se détend et la vie est belle!

Bookmaking 101

Last week at the Morrisburg Polymer Clay Gathering, I taught a class about making a book. My knowledge is limited: I am at the point where I am not aware of what I don't know! It was a very simple - I didn't say easy - class. I taught all that I knew. Now I want to learn more about bookmaking, however I want to stick with Coptic stitching. I like that kind of binding because the books lie flat and you don't have to fight with them to write/draw/sketch in them. You can make them small and unobtrusive if you want to make an entry in public.
La fin de semaine dernière, j'ai donné un cours sur l'assemblage d'un livre. Par contre, mes connaissances sont très limitées et j'ai montré tout ce que je sais. À ce stade-ci, je ne sais pas ce que je ne sais pas!!! J'aime les livres faits selon la méthode copte parce qu'ils s'ouvrent à plat. De plus, on peut les faire assez petits; ainsi, il est possible d'écrire/dessiner dedans de manière discrète en public.



My goal was one or two enthusiastic bookmakers! Boy was I wrong. Goes to show, you should never have expectations because most of the time they prove to be wrong!!

Je me serais contentée de deux personnes enthousiastes. Je me suis trompée royalement. Vous pouvez voir une vingtaine de livres dans les photos. Sont tous plus beaux les uns que les autres. Suis retournée chez moi le coeur en fête.

MPCG - Back

Last weekend (Thursday to Sunday) we held our seventh annual Morrisburg Polymer Clay Gathering. Year after year clayers come and have a great time: we leave all worries at the door, the outside world doesn't exist anymore. Thirty five smiling and enthusiastic participants: claying, classes, no need to prepare meals, reconnecting with friends who share the same interest; it is an obvious recipe for success.
La fin de semaine dernière, nous avons tenu notre septième rencontre à Morrisburg (un village en Ontario). Année après année, les participantes viennent et se paient du bon temps; quoi demander de plus: fimotage, ateliers, pas de repas à préparer, la rencontre avec les amies qui partagent les mêmes intérêts. Une recette gagnante quoi!

One popular group project (Margi Laurin's idea) is to take a known work of art, cut it up in 36 rectangles and ask each participant to reproduce in polymer clay what they see on their rectangle. This year we did the painting of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol. Everybody looks forward to making their card and seeing the ensuing result. This project brings out the child in all of us: those ooohhhhs and aaahhhs proved it! Everybody leaves with a picture of the project.
Voici un projet communautaire original qui a fait des heureuses. C'est une idée de mon amie Margi Laurin: nous choisissons une oeuvre connue que nous découpons en petits rectangles (env. 7 x 9 cm dans ce cas-ci) et nous demandons à chaque personne de reproduire avec la pâte polymère ce qu'il y a sur le rectangle qui lui a été assigné de façon alléatoire. Cette année nous avons choisi le portrait de Marilyn Monroe peint par Andy Warhol (l'an dernier, c'était un Picasso). Nul besoin de vous dire que toutes ont hâte de voir l'assemblage final pour découvrir enfin de quelle oeuvre il s'agit. Notre enfant intérieur fait surface lors du placement de chaque carré. Tout le monde aime les surprises!

For one reason or another, my life is full of synchronicity. Here is a cool one. In my last post I said I would not throw out polymer clay in the garbage: actually I have been pretty good at keeping this resolution for a while now. Now that I make it public what happens? This:

You see,I am packing to go to Morrisburg,to help organize our annual meeting and to enjoy myself in the company of fantastic people. A few of the projects ask for liquid clay. I pick up my jar and.... the plastic jar crumbles in my hand. I tried to salvage most of it but I had to throw the rest in the....garbage!!!
Those of you who are coming to Morrisburg and reading this, you can bring a small (glass)jar and I will share some with you. Back to packing!

Earthday - Jour de la terre

To celebrate mother-earth today I thought I would talk about using the elements she so generously gives us and most of the time we don't even see. Went outside and looked around me and saw plenty. First of all, the snow is just about melted here; there is just a little patch left in my back yard so I am going to make the most of it because it won't be there tomorrow!

Afin de célébrer le jour de la terre, j'ai pensé parler des éléments que nous donne cette terre, abondance qui nous entoure et que nous ne voyons pas toujours. Suis sortie, ai regardé autour de moi. Il reste un tout petit ilôt de neige ici qui va disparaitre cet apres-midi. Je l'utilise donc.



Second, my pebble garden is free of snow: I collect interesting pebbles when I go places and love to look at them and sometimes use them with polymer clay. They make the best molds ever and (yes, you guessed it!) they are unique. No two alike and a little off balance sometimes which makes things more interesting.

Mon jardin de cailloux n'est plus sous la neige: je les collectionne quand je voyage, j'aime les regarder et (vous l'avez deviné) je les utilise comme moules avec la pâte polymère. Sont uniques, parfois un peu débalancés ce qui les rends plus intéressants.



I made this green pendant a while ago and it gets a lot of hits in my picturetrail album. I never really talked about it but it was made on a pebble - I did go looking for it in the pebble garden and never found it but the sun was warm and I found some other cool pebbles.

Ce pendentif vert, je l'ai fabriqué il y a belle lurette et je me rends compte qu'on vient souvent le voir sur le site "picture trail". Je n'en ai jamais parlé et maintenant j'en ai l'occasion. J'ai ulilisé un caillou pour le mouler; j'ai tenté de retrouver le caillou dans mon jardin mais peine perdue!! Par contre le soleil était chaud et j'ai trouvé d'autres cailloux intéressants.



How do I go about working with a pebble as a mold: easy. Take an interesting pebble, turn it in all directions find the best one. If the pebble is shiny you can get away with only cornstarch as mould release. If not, cover the pebble with aluminium foil, one layer will do. Using scrap clay, cover the part you like with a thin sheet of clay. This means you are only covering one half of the pebble. Bake that; then carefully remove the clay from the pebble, even it out somewhat so that it lies flat. Put that on a sheet of raw clay, cut to fit, you can overlap it, smooth the edges as much as you can, bake; doesn't have to be perfect at this point because you are going to cover the baked piece with the clay you want to use for your finished (lets call it) pendant. Drill holes. Oh yes, when I make cabochons, I rather have a round side and a flat side: if it becomes a pendant, it sits better (it doesn't roll around).

Comment je fais pour mouler sur une pierre? "Super face" comme dirait ma petite fille Ariane. Trouvez une roche intéressante retournez-la pour trouver le meilleur angle. Si le caillou est luisant vous pouvez vous en sortir avec de la fécule de maïs comme agent de démoulage; sinon, recouvrez la surface intéressante avec une feuille d'aluminium. Recouvrez avec une mince feuille de pâte "scrap" et cuisez. Démoulez et égalisez pour obtenir un tour assez plat. Placez sur une autre feuille de pâte non cuite, faire une découpe un peu plus grande et ramenez le tout en faisant raccorder la partie cuite et la feuille non cuite. Cuisez. Pas besoin de chercher la perfection ici because on recouvre le tout avec la pâte qui sera utilisée pour votre produit fini (mettons que ce sera un pendentif). Quand je fais ces pendentifs cabochons, je préfère un côté plat et un côté bombé. Il reste mieux en place sans rouler d'un côté à l'autre.

Because today is Earth Day, my resolution is: to not throw out any clay in the garbage, in any shape or form, baked or unbaked. It is a plastic after all!

Étant donné qu'aujourd'hui c'est le Jour de la terre, je m'engage à ne pas jeter de pâte (cuite ou non cuite) aux ordures. Après tout, c'est du plastique non?

This one is all about shaving off thin slivers of clay from a sheet of clay.
You can use this tip for the mokume gane or the mica shift techniques.
For making a mokume gane, you usually stack up different colours of clay laminate them into one sheet and then make an impression upon this sheet with a texture or other texturing tools. As for the mica shift, you use a metallic clay (gold works best for me) and impress textures on the clay sheet.
To get the mokume gane effect, you have to shave off a very thin layer of clay and the colours in the underlying layers will appear. For the mica shift, I think that breaking the surface tension will bring out the mica shift effect (or 3-d or hidden image) to the surface. I love playing around with both of these techniques.

J'utilise ce truc avec le mokume gane ou pour faire ressortir les images cachées quand on imprime une texture sur une feuille de pâte métallisée.

Now for the tip which works for me. Instead of curving your blade to do the shaving of thin slivers, I like to curve the polymer clay sheet and use a straight blade. To give my clay sheet a gentle curve, I place it on a large jar (or it could be an ice cream container). Why do I like this method?: it is because the curve is always the same, and which makes the shaving part more precise and easy: more control in the shaving process. Here is a picture of my usual set up. I usually use both hands to hold my blade but my other one was taking a picture....

Au lieu de recourber la lame pour enlever une tranche minime de pâte à la surface, (les courbures de la lame ne sont pas toujours pareilles et parfois une mini fausse manoeuvre a pour résultat qu'on a trop pris de pâte, je préfère donner une légère courbure à la pâte.

Presently, I am working on book covers for a class that I will be giving at our annual polymer clay gathering in Morrisburg Ontario and I need samples of different stages of completion. I have been playing around with the layering/texturing technique which gave me the idea to share this tip.
C'est en préparant mon cours d'assemblage de livre que m'est venue l'idée de partager ce truc car récemment j'ai travaillé ces techniques.



It is possible to be more creative with this and bring it to another level. On the back cover of the blade holder below, I played around with the texture and the result after it was shaved. Many possibilities lurking around the corner don't you think?
Il est possible de pousser la créativité encore plus loin en combinant la texture originale avec le résultat de la découpe. C'est ce que j'ai fait sur le couvercle d'un porte-lames. Qui sait, vous aurez peut-être le goût d'explorer!!!

Body back, Mind ?

Six weeks later, and this is the view from my window! Not as pretty as the picture in the previous post but the snow is slowly melting... yay!
Six semaines plus tard. vue de ma fenêtre! C'est un peu moins joli que la photo précédente: la neige est en train de fondre.Youppi!



Got back recently from the other side of this vast country (Rossland BC). Glad to be home, sad to be away from this part of my family that I will miss. We have a new baby boy; he decided to make his appearance 10 days late so we prolonged our trip by 10 days. Not much artistic activity during this stay, but a lot of quality time with the boys.
Revenus récemment de l'autre bout de ce vaste pays (Rossland CB), nous avons prolongé notre voyage de dix jours car bébé a pris tout son temps pour faire sa première apparition.



We came home to a fridge on strike(the snow came in handy) and Morrisburg is looming close and needs attention big time.
Nous avons été accueillis par un frigo en grève et il faudra mettre les bouchées doubles pour l'organisation de Morrisburg.

Because this post is not really about clay or whatever, I thought I would post some pictures of bottles of hope I made last year. I usually get my BOH act together in the month of May.
J'ai pensé poster quelques photos de bouteilles de l'espoir que j'ai fabriquées l'an dernier; je me mets à l'oeuvre au mois de mai habituellement.



I always liked assemblages of things so I photographed a bunch of bottles as seen from above.
Comme j'aime les assemblages, j'ai pris une photo en plongée d'une série de bouteilles.

It is good to be back...yesssss

From my window

This is what I can see, right now. When I get back with the arrival of spring, I will take the same picture to see the changes. "Go west old girl", is where I am going; will be getting acquainted with a new little being making his/her debut into this world. I will also get to play with Henri, the 2 year old big brother.



In the meantime, here is a picture of the little tiles I really enjoy making/inventing. It measures 4 x 5 inches (8 x 10 cm)and it is assembled with linen thread; the last in this series.



Below... Weirdly enough, this also looks like a view from a window. As you probably guessed, it was made with the clay sheet left over from the cutouts. I thought it looked interesting so I baked it with the intention of using it in some way or another. It remained in my face for a long time and then...one day boom, there it was. And now here it is!
